4 Ways to Fall in Love With Your Career Again
Vincent Benjamin

Happy Valentine’s Day! Love is in the air and you may be feeling a little euphoric on chocolate today, but have you stopped to think about what Valentine’s Day means for your career. Have you been feeling like you’re in a slump? Have the winter blues impacted your day-to-day work? What if you could fall in love with your career all over again? Before you end this Valentine’s Day and go home to your sweetheart and family, consider these 4 ways you can improve your happiness on the job.

  1. Find new perspective. Maybe you love what you do, but you don’t love how you do it. It may not be your specific job but the company culture, environment, or daily routines that have you falling out of love with your career. Take some time to think about your job from a new angle. What small changes can you make that will improve your experience? If small changes aren’t possible consider making a bigger change such as transitioning careers or exploring new companies.
  2. Talk to your boss. Before you make a drastic change, talk to your boss about what you can do to improve your situation and make yourself feel more engaged. If you’re a star player or key performer, they probably don’t want to lose you either. Maybe you could take on some additional duties that will help challenge you in a new way. Or maybe you qualify for a promotion or can transition your current job in to another area of the company.
  3. Change your setting. You don’t have to leave your current job completely to get a change of scenery. See if you can move your desk or office to a location within your building that is better suited to you. Maybe your dissatisfaction with your job has nothing to do with the job itself and more natural light or a new paint job can give you the boost your mood needs. Anything from redecorating your desk to working from home on occasion can improve your attitude.
  4. Reward yourself. Lastly, if you want to invigorate your career, consider the ways in which you can reward yourself for your victories. Big or small, create a deal with yourself to receive some personal reward whenever you complete something important. You can go for a walk after you’ve cleared your inbox. Or you can go out for a drink with friends on Thursday afternoons. Whatever will make you feel more engaged, add it to your routine.
