Find Your Dream Job: How to Look for Hidden Opportunities
Vincent Benjamin

You’ve already taken the easy steps to finding your next job, so what happens now? So many other job seekers have followed the same steps that not everyone can achieve their dream job with these conventional strategies. With everyone vying for the same opportunities, your competition is stiff. So how do you find the jobs that not everyone else has access to? There is an entire hidden world of jobs available, you just have to know where to look. Here are some tips to find your next dream job in the most unlikely places.

  • Don’t keep quiet. Unless you need to keep your job search confidential due to a current employer situation, most experts recommend that you talk about it to your extended social circle. No one knows where a new opportunity can come from, but you may miss out on jobs that would be perfect for you if no one knows you’re looking.
  • Ask for an informational interview. If you have a company in mind, contact a member of their team for an informational interview. Schedule a meeting to sit down over coffee and talk to them about what they do and how they do it. Talk to them about the company and the job itself, what they like or dislike about it, and how you might be able to connect with the company in your career.
  • Work with an agency. Sometimes the simplest answer is the one we dismiss without considering it. Working with a staffing agency can help open doors that were otherwise closed to you as an independent job seeker. Many companies talk to their staffing partners before making a job public, so you would have the potential at reaching new jobs before everyone else.
  • Make yourself a target candidate. Another option, especially in the age of the internet, is to make yourself a valuable option. Position yourself as an industry leader by creating a website and blog that shares your knowledge. Build your online brand to showcase yourself and your skills. Many recruiters and hiring managers are using social media to find potential candidates.
  • Join an industry organization. Lastly, don’t forget about the power of old-fashioned networking. Get out and meet new people by joining an industry organization. Attend seminars or social functions to introduce yourself to others in your field. You may find that opportunities are available that wouldn’t be pushed to the public.
