Top 4 Goals for Your IT Career
Vincent Benjamin

There are a lot of things you can do with your experience in IT. And, depending on what you enjoy doing, you should position your long term goals in the right direction for you. There are many career paths in IT, such as programming, sales, or management. So what is it that you want to do? Here are the top 4 goals for you to consider for your IT career and how to make them happen.

  • Learn a new skill. Information technology is changing all the time. Regardless of your current specialization, there are always new things you can learn to add to your arsenal of skills. For example, in today’s climate, learning about information security could lead to an interesting career path in the future. Choose an aspect of IT that you want to know more about and take time to learn it on your own or by taking classes.
  • Earn a promotion. Another goal that can help you advance your IT career is to gun for that next promotion. You will never want to stay stagnant in your job, so looking at the ways you can move forward will be an important part of your professional development. Knowing when the time is right to approach your managers for a promotion is also key. So what can you do to make sure your career is on track for advancement within the company?
  • Aim for management. A promotion may not be the only thing you’re looking at for the future of your career. Do you want to become a manager? Maybe not just a supervisor, but a director or C-level position could be on your radar. Or, how does Vice President sound? These are achievable if you make the right moves early in your career. Focus on building relationships. Do good work. Accept additional responsibilities. Be someone your company trusts to put in a position as important as CIO or VP.
  • Start a business. Of course, for many IT professionals, becoming a manager or getting a promotion is not the move they want to make. Information technology is the perfect industry for entrepreneurship. What do you want to do with the industry? What can you offer that your company or other companies cannot? Use this information as a starting point to creating a business plan and forging your own path in technology.
