Each department within a corporation is part of an interdependent ecosystem. The departments all rely on one another for work to go smoothly so each aspect can perform their tasks appropriately. IT departments, which used to be a part of the unseen background, are now front as center as technology becomes integrated into every aspect of business. So, it is important to ensure that you are hiring the right people for your It jobs. Why is cultural fit so important in this department and how can you make sure you’re hiring the right people? - Your core values. When you’re looking for potential candidates for your IT department, you need to look at the core values of your company, the current team, and the job seeker. It is difficult to shoehorn a professional personality into a casual office and vice versa. Find out what kind of values you all have in common to make the best determination of someone is right for your team.
- The face of your company. How does your It department represent the company as a whole? Is your division customer facing? Do they interact with a variety of other departments within the company? It is important that this team also reflect the face of your company along with every other member of your staff. Just because someone is technical doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have interpersonal skills to work well with others.
- Motivating the team. Another aspect of corporate culture which management often forgets is how your staff is motivated. For IT, is this about development or innovation? Or, are some members of the team more motivated by processes and procedures. It is a good idea to play to the individual strengths of your team members and allow those who are creative to find satisfaction in new projects while those who are process oriented keep the organization intact.
- Assessing new candidates. When you’re hiring for new IT professionals, look at all of these items together. What are their core values? How do they compare to the rest of your team? Do they have similar personality traits or would they clash? How are they motivated and is this something you can accommodate? And what are their soft skills when working with others in the office and beyond?
