There are a number of factors to consider before choosing to accept a remote position and neglecting these considerations can create a less than ideal situation. Is the Time Difference a Problem?

When you look for remote positions, you aren’t limited by your physical location. This means you could effectively find a job with a company located on the other side of the country or even the world.

While this means you’ll have access to additional opportunities, you do need to consider how the time difference will impact you. If you need to be available during “standard business hours” based on the organization’s time zone, this could lead to a significant shift in your current schedule.

For example, if you live in California and accept a job that requires an 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule with a company based in New York, you’ll have to work 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific time to match your team. If you take a job with a company in London and have to adjust to their time zone, an 8-to-5 workday in California runs from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. England time, leaving minimal overlap with your team’s schedule.

In some cases, the time difference isn’t a problem and, in fact, may be beneficial. However, it’s an important point to review before accepting a role.

Are Solid Communication Tools in Place?

When you work remotely, you don’t get the benefits of gathering in the same office as your manager and coworkers. Instead, you’ll need to rely on a variety of communication tools to ensure you remain in contact.

Most companies have a set of communication tools at their disposal, ranging from traditional telephones to unified communications systems. However, you need to make sure the available lines of communication allow you to be effective in your position and continually in the loop.

Additionally, you need to be comfortable with an “always on” arrangement, at least during work hours. Disconnecting from communications platforms at any point during the day might not be an option, so you need to be okay with that arrangement.

Before you accept a job, ask about the tools will be made available to you through the company. Ideally, you’ll want to see a combination of offerings, including voice, email and messenger-based options, giving you a number of ways to stay in touch with your project team. You should also define the company’s expectations regarding when and how you remain connected to make sure you are comfortable with that level of involvement.

Are Your Self-Motivated?

When you work remotely, you won’t have a manager on-site to remind you about important deadlines and ensure you are using your time wisely. Instead, you’ll be primarily responsible for managing your tasks.

If an unstructured environment isn’t ideal for you, then remote work isn’t likely to be a great fit. However, if you are self-motivated and capable of managing your time wisely, then it might be right for you.
