Do you love numbers? Do you like to solve complex puzzles? Are you interested in helping individuals and companies succeed? If so, you may want consider a career in finance. Regardless of the industry you’re in now, you can make the transition into this career with a few steps. Finance affects almost everyone, so chances are you’ve had some level of experience in your past jobs. Here are some things to consider before you take the leap into a financial role.

  1. Find a mentor. Before you decide to transition into finance, find a mentor to help you maneuver through the process. Start by conducting “informational interviews” with professionals in your area. Set up coffee meetings to talk to others who have made a similar transition. This can help you better understand what you need to do and to learn from their mistakes. Once you’ve met with a few people, determine who might be best equipped to help you in your journey and ask them to help you with the process as your mentor.
  2. Take an assessment test. Next, there are plenty of on-line tools that can assist you with making the right decision for your career. There are a number of different aspects to the financial industry, and you may be better suited for some more than others. Use these tools to determine which type of financial job is best suited to your current, transferable skills, interests, and personality.
  3. Go back to school. Lastly, you’ll need to fill in the gaps of your current knowledge. You may be able to take some additional adult education classes or you can go back to school for a full-fledged degree in your new field. Sometimes you can even do this while you’re working. While transferable skills are going to be a top selling point as you apply for jobs in finance, you’ll still need the knowledge of the industry to back that up. School can be a great way to enhance your experience to land the right job.
