4 Questions to Ask Before Working With a Career Coach
Vincent Benjamin

In a tough job market it is no wonder that both experienced and inexperienced professionals turn to the services of career coaches. Having someone to bounce ideas off of, help you make challenging decisions, and give you advice are comforting thoughts. But are career coaches always worth it? And how do you determine if and when they’re right for you? Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re considering your next career move.

  1. What do you expect out of the relationship? What are you really looking for in a coach? Different specialists can offer different things. A career coach can help you move forward when you’re stuck, give you a fresh perspective, and can help you with many of the technical details of a job search.
  2. Does this coach have the right experience? Unfortunately there are a lot of people who call themselves career coaches who do not have the credentials to truly help. It is important that you interview a career coach just like you would an employee to determine if they are the right fit for your needs.
  3. Are you looking for a magic bullet? You need to remember that a career coach is not a magic bullet. They cannot guarantee that you will get a job or a promotion. They only provide you with the tools you need to give yourself a better opportunity. It is a bad idea to hold them accountable in this way.
  4. Do you have a career mentor? Many professionals won’t need a career coach at all. Simply by expanding your network and connecting with others who have pursued the same career path that you’re following can give you all the access you need to resources for success. Start with a career mentor and you can fill in the gaps with a coach or staffing professional.
