4 Worthwhile Risks for Your IT Career

“The risk of a wrong decision is preferable to the terror of indecision.” – Maimonides

Risk taking is an art and it is important to know which risks are worth it and which are not. When you’re considering your career in Information Technology, how do you know what risks will be beneficial for you. The last thing you want to do is jeopardize your career with the wrong choices. So how do you mitigate your risk while still taking chances that can pay off? Here are 4 risks you can take with your IT career that will be worth it in the end.

  1. Choose a startup company. Many young professionals are concerned about taking a job with a start-up company. There may be very little job security and the thought of having to start over again in a year can be a big concern. However, very little can replace the experience someone gets in this kind of environment. Don’t be afraid to take this job if it sounds like the right fit for you.
  2. Don’t move to a big technology hub. Lots of IT Professionals think it’s important to relocate to places like Silicon Valley for the right job. However, there is a lot of wisdom to being a big fish in a little pond rather than the other way around. Taking an IT job in a city that isn’t known for technology could mean you have better opportunities in the long term.
  3. Consider the company culture. When you’re deciding on a job offer think about the overall environment. There is a lot of talk about “fit” when it comes to company culture so it is equally as important that you are as comfortable with the company as they are with you. If you prefer an environment that has a lot of procedures and rules, then a casual company that focuses on creativity and innovation may not be the right fit.
  4. Don’t put too much emphasis on money. Information technology can be a lucrative career move, but don’t start your career out by only taking the jobs that pay the highest salary. Money shouldn’t be the only motivator for taking a job. If the job is right but the money isn’t top dollar, you may still want to consider it in order to gain the experience you need to advance your career.
