6 Skills That Can Improve Your IT Job Search
Vincent Benjamin

It is easy to get frustrated when a job search takes longer than you expected. You know that information technology is a growing field, but if no one is biting it can be difficult to keep plugging away. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to shake things up and create an entirely new strategy. Before you send out your next resume, consider these adding and improving these skills as a method to speed up your IT job search.

  1. Integrated business knowledge. Beyond your actual skills in technology, hiring managers need to know that you have general business acumen. They want to see how successful you’ve been in the past and how you can benefit their organization. Review these aspects of your previous positions and create a narrative that is front and center.
  2. Strong writing skills. Start by designing the perfect IT cover letter. This will help communicate your interest and your abilities to a potential employer. It is critical for all employees to be able to effectively communicate in writing, especially over email where there is often a lot of ambiguity. Starting off on the right foot is a great way to demonstrate these skills.
  3. Ability to communicate with others. Speaking of communication, good IT candidates will have the ability to discuss technology with people of all skill levels. For instance, how you discuss technology with a vendor will be very different than with a customer or an internal employee.
  4. Project management experience. Most companies want to see how someone can organize multiple projects and manage multiple people. It isn’t enough for you to know what you’re doing, but you have to be able to prioritize and understand what everyone around you is doing as well.
  5. Insatiable need to keep learning. Curiosity might have killed the cat, but it is also what sets valuable IT professionals apart from their competition. It is great that you have a lot of knowledge to offer now, but what is even greater is that you want to continue to learn and develop. Demonstrate that need to increase your understanding.
  6. Ability to be flexible. Finally, an employer wants to know that you’re flexible. They want to know that you won’t be easily frustrated if a project turns on a dime and new priorities need to be established. They want to know that you are willing to take on any challenge along the way.
