7 Steps to Pivot Your IT Career

At some point in your IT career, you may envision moving in a different direction. After all, there is a broad selection of tech specialties, and, over time, you may find yourself intrigued about a different niche.  

Luckily, it is possible to pivot your IT career. If you want to shift your course, here’s how to make that happen.  

1. Identify Your Transferable Skills 

Most professionals have a variety of transferable skills. In some cases, parts of your technical expertise will be relevant in a slew of specialties. Plus, your soft skills are almost universally valuable, regardless of your niche.  

Spend a moment determining which of your skills work in other tech areas. Determine how they align with the must-haves listed in a job ad for your target role. That way, you can take stock of what you bring to the table today, making it easier to handle the next step.  

2. Fill Any Skill Gaps 

Once you know what you already have, it’s simpler to figure out what’s missing. See which must-haves aren’t part of your current skills arsenal. Then, make a plan to fill those gaps. 

There are a few resources that can make choosing the skills you need easier. First, industry publications, tech thought leaders, and IT blogs can be great places to start. Many of these track new developments, including what skills will be in-demand in the future. 

However, you don’t have to stop there. Tech conferences and trade shows are brimming with information about new advances. Many vendors showcase their latest solutions, for one. For another, many of the speakers and sessions focus on what’s on the horizon, giving you additional clues. 

In some cases, you may need formal education, such as a specific course, to gain new skills. At times, you may be able to join projects in your current position that let you branch out in the right area or work with a mentor who can show you the ropes.  

The important part is to figure out what gaps are there and then to create a plan for handling them. This will ensure that, when it’s time to take the leap, you’ll be qualified for your target job.  

3. Have a Timeline 

Giving yourself a deadline is an effective way to make sure you stay focused. With a timeline in place, you know precisely when you’d like to have your new position. Plus, you can use the window to help you schedule skill-boosting tasks, resume updates, and other critical parts of the job search process.  

4. Spin Your Story 

When you’re pivoting your career, you need to revamp your elevator pitch, approach to your cover letter, and interview answers. You need to be able to articulate why a hiring manager should give you a chance to head in a different direction.  

Usually, this means learning how to promote your transferable skills and discuss your goals enthusiastically. A strong skills foundation, coupled with a lot of passion, can go a long way.  

5. Update Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile 

Adjusting your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect your new goal is essential. Not only does it showcase your desire to pivot your career, but it also ensures your application materials and profile target your preferred opportunities.  

6. Adjust Your Mindset 

Pivoting your career is scary, particularly if you’re used to being a more experienced candidate. At times, it’s not unlike starting completely anew professionally, which can be intimidating.  

That’s why adjusting your mindset is critical. Recognize that you’re doing something bold, and embrace the challenge. While the road may take more time to walk, it’s a journey with a big reward at the end. So, take a deep breath, harness your passion, and start taking action.  

7. Launch Your Job Search
