A Millennial’s Guide to a Career in Finance
Vincent Benjamin

Are you graduating with a degree in finance this spring? If you’re in the market for a new opportunity, what do you need to know about a career in finance and accounting? As a millennial entering a job market and competing against more experienced professionals, there are a few things you should know to help you find your next opportunity. Here are some tips that can help you kick your finance job search into high gear and land the right job for your goals.

  • Select target companies. Often, job seekers focus too much on responding to online job postings. Instead, you may want to consider contacting companies you want to work for directly. You can utilize resources such as LinkedIn to find local organizations and business leaders to connect with. Even if they aren’t looking to hire right away, they will consider their connections in the future.
  • Build your networking toolbox. An online professional network is great, but in-person networking is also an important skill to cultivate. Join a local chapter of a professional finance organization. Attend events, seminars, and programs to meet others in your industry. Always bring business cards or contact information and point them to your website with an online resume and portfolio.
  • Tailor your resume. Your resume is the first impression you’ll make on a hiring manager. It is important that you think outside the box to set yourself apart from your competition. Include information on your resume that captures the attention of a potential employer. Share achievements, accomplishments, and specific experience in finance.
  • Work with a mentor. Many young finance professionals find having a mentor an important step to success. Talk to someone already working in the field who can become a sounding board as you learn how to navigate a job search. They can share stories about how they got started and help point you in the right direction. They can even shed light on mistakes they’ve made to help you avoid the same problems.
