Job Seekers: How To Stand Out From The Crowd
Vincent Benjamin

As a job seeker, your one job is to convince an employer that you’re interesting enough to warrant a continued conversation. When you’re sending out resumes and networking, how do you keep this simple truth in mind? In order to make yourself more memorable and stand out from your competition, there are a few things you can do when you’re meeting with potential employers. Here are some ideas you can start with today.

  • Impress everyone in the office. It is helpful to think about your interview in a different way. Consider that everything you do from the moment you arrive is part of the evaluation experience. In this case, make sure that you are making a good impression on everyone you meet, from the parking lot to the reception desk.
  • Focus on your online branding. Today’s employers are taking their impressions to a new level. They want to see your web presence, both personal and professional. For anything that is private, such as Facebook, be sure to lock down your security settings to ensure that only friends see certain things. Otherwise, create a website and a blog that further your professional image. Use public social media, like LinkedIn and Twitter, to facilitate your branding.
  • Optimize your parting words. Before you leave the interview, don’t let the opportunity for the last word pass you by. Shake hands and reiterate how interested you are in the job. Be confident and take this time to remind them why you are the right person to hire over your completion. Also, you can ask when you can start or whey they may make a decision.
  • Embrace the art of the thank you. Finally, don’t forget to thank the interviewer for their time in writing. When you get home, compose an email and send it the same day. Thank them for the opportunity to get to know them and their business. Feel free to add things you might have forgotten to mention. Also, for an added personal touch, pen a hand-written thank you note and drop it in the mail.
