Should You Make a Lateral Job Move? Pros and Cons

Not every move you make in your career is going to be up the corporate ladder. There are times when a lateral move will be critical for your success. For instance, if you find yourself just off the career path you want to follow you may find the ability to adjust course right within your current organization. But there are other cases where making that lateral move can be detrimental to your career growth. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of making this kind of career move.

Pro: Improve your Job Security

Is there a need within your office that no one else wants to, or can, fill? Or, maybe it is a similar job to your current role but at a new company. To prove you are a team player, sometimes choosing to take a lateral move is a good strategy for the long term.

Con: No salary increase.

However, it isn’t likely that a lateral move, even to another company, will allow for any increase in salary. If you’re goal is to continue upward momentum with your income, taking a lateral move may not be in your best interest.

Pro: Work with a better suited boss.

You may have found in your employment that you and your current boss do not have complimentary personalities. Is there someone in your organization who is better suited to your work style? Or maybe at a competitor? Taking a lateral move may actually help save your career path and your sanity.

Con: Potential stagnation.

By actively choosing to remain in a position similar to your current job you also run the risk of stifling your development. If you’re feeling restless, this may be one of the contributing reasons. If challenging yourself is an important goal for your career, a lateral move isn’t the best choice.

Pro: Change of scenery.

On the other hand, even if you like what you do you may become frustrated by your current environment. A simple change of scenery could give you the boost of energy you need to continue on with this line of work.

Con: Derailment of your goals.

Lastly, if you decide to take that job that doesn’t give you more responsibilities or opportunities, you may find yourself veering from the job path you originally set for your future. Evaluate the role with you goals before you decide to accept it.
