Top 5 Questions to Ask Financial Candidates in an Interview
Vincent Benjamin

Are your interview strategies really finding you the very best financial candidates? You may be surprised to learn that some of your tried and true interview questions are missing the mark. The cost of a bad hire is exponential, so avoiding a negative situation is far preferable than starting the process over again. Start with the interviewing process to ensure that you are screening the most qualified candidates for your open financial positions. Here are 5 interview questions that can help you drill down and only hire the best.

  1. What do you know about our company? You need to establish if the candidate has done their homework. This is important because you will want to hire someone who is genuinely interested in your position, not just any position. It can also indicate how much attention to detail they are willing to pay and whether or not they are able to dig deep to conduct important research.
  2. What can you offer that your competition can’t? The candidate should know that they aren’t the only person you’re interviewing for this job. It is important that they share what makes the unique to demonstrate to you why they are the right fit over all of the other potential new hires that you’ve spoken with.
  3. What hours are you willing to work? Some financial jobs will require a commitment of extended hours, especially during certain times of the year. While no one should feel shame for wanting personal time, they should also be aware that additional hours are often necessary. Ask them to be honest with you about their scheduling needs.
  4. What would your former coworkers say about you? Asking a candidate to get into the mindset of someone else is always a fun exercise. The hope is they won’t simply repeat platitudes about their work history but really give you honest feedback about who they are as a person and whether or not the will fit in with your organization.
  5. What other industries are you exploring? Lastly, it may come a surprise to many hiring managers, but not all candidates are focused on their specific career paths. However, you’re going to want to work with someone who is dedicated. If you discover that your financial candidate is also interested in three other industries, they may not have enough commitment.
