Working from home is becoming an increasingly popular choice for professionals at all levels. Remote working has a lot of benefits for both employers and employees, but only if done responsibly. It can lower the cost of overhead and allow employees to avoid a commute and be more efficient. Work from home options also increase overall satisfaction. But, it can be a risk if not managed correctly. Do you have a work from home policy in place? Here are several things to consider to make it successful for everyone.
- The right days of the week. Sometimes a successful work from home is reliant on the way it is implemented. Unless all of your employee are remote every day, consider the right days of the week to allow remote working. For example, Fridays can become distracting to allow individuals to work from home. However, working from home on Monday will allow your staff to catch up after the weekend without in-office distractions.
- Drive teamwork with goals. Companies are often reticent to offer work from home options because they are afraid it will affect the office culture or team based projects. When employees don’t interact with their coworkers, they can become disconnected. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Give your remote staff goals to achieve the require teamwork. They can collaborate on projects remotely and work together to solve problems.
- Provide the right equipment. To make working from home, and working with the team, effective, you must be able to provide them with the tools necessary to facilitate their jobs. Invest in cloud technology to allow everyone to log into the company’s systems from anywhere. Obtain online communications tools to help keep people connected. Slack is one of the most popular tools available today. Conference calls and online meetings are also helpful.
- Emphasize results based performance. So how do you manage your employees when they are out of sight? Without daily oversight, will they stay on task and complete their jobs in a timely manner. Companies with successful remote working arrangements don’t evaluate their employees specifically by monitoring a time clock. Instead, they focus on the results of the task or project. If goals are met on time, the process doesn’t matter as much.
