3 Reasons to Get an MBA and Boost Your Tech Career
Vincent Benjamin

When working in IT do you think it is valuable to get a Master’s in Business administration? This is a tough question to answer it much of it depends on your previous experience, your current work, and your future goals. We wanted to break down the pros and cons of getting this degree in conjunction with your IT career so you can decide if it is right for you.

If you answer yes to the following questions you may want to consider an MBA.

  1. Do you want to be in a leadership role such as a CIO? Not every chief information officer has an MBA but it can give you a competitive advantage if this is the career path you’re seeking. The role of CIO or other executive positions are elite positions granted only to the best of the best so to get yourself started on a path toward this goal it may be best to have all the tools possible to give yourself a leg up.
  2. Do you want to be in project management? Alternately, even if C-level positions aren’t your end goal, project managers should also have skills that go beyond coding and hardware. Managing other people and the project is a skill that requires practice and leadership skills so getting an MBA could help you with this process and give you a better list of credentials when it comes to finding your next job in this type of role.
  3. Do you believe that IT shouldn’t be hidden behind the scenes? Finally, it is important to note that industry experts believe that the days of the isolated IT department are over. Technology is driving innovation, marketing, and sales so even the most technical IT candidates need to be able to adjust to a changing environment where interaction is required at all levels. IT doesn’t have to be limited to the office dungeon or outsourced companies but can take an active role in business. An MBA can help you navigate that process.

If you answer no to these questions you may be more suited to a strictly technical role within IT and you can focus your continuing education on other facets of your career.
