4 Practical Tips to Refocus at Work
Vincent Benjamin

Distractions are everywhere. Just writing this blog post made us stop and start several times. Being unfocused can really destroy your motivation during the work day, but it happens to everyone. So how can you get your mind back in the zone and regain your focus when you need to most? Here are 4 tips to make it happen!

  1. Write down the distractions. It’s impossible to focus on the task you need to complete if all you can think about are the other things you’ll have to do later. Before you start your important task, create a to-do list of everything else. Then you know you won’t forget anything and can apply your undivided attention to the project.
  2. Minimize disruptions. In an office environment it can be difficult to avoid the constant interruptions from coworkers or the phone. But it is critical that you find a place where you can spend at least a half hour to an hour working without distractions from outside sources. Close your door, let the phone go to voice mail, and concentrate completely on the task.
  3. Swap the order of tasks. Most of us will admit that we tend to do the easiest tasks first and leave the harder ones for last. It’s because we feel like we’re accomplishing something. But that leaves us with limited energy for the harder jobs. Swap the order and leave the easy things for the end of the day.
  4. Use your strengths. Too many people try to shoehorn themselves into someone else’s shoes. No two people work in exactly the same way so it is time to stop trying. If you’re not a morning person, don’t schedule your most important tasks for the morning. If you are, embrace it and start cracking right away. Use your own strengths and talents to help you manage your projects rather than recommendations from others.
